COVINGTON – The Kentucky Department of Education released its annual assessment data last week for school districts and individual schools across the state.
The Covington Independent School District was once again near the bottom in designated subject areas, but one of the schools bringing good news for the district was Holmes Middle School, which saw their Gap score improve by 52 points.
The school, which is 83 percent free and reduced lunch, jumped from an overall Gap score of 11.5 in 2015-16 to 63.5 in 2016-17.
Achievement improved almost 8 points from 44.6 to 52.5, while growth rose from 38.7 to 48.7 for a Learners Score of 54.9 which is just over 23 points better than a year ago. In fact, going into this school year, Holmes Middle School is just 0.7 away from proficiency.
Second year Principal Jeanetta Kathman believes that one of the big keys to the improvement was building consistent processes and procedures across the board.
“Teaching is a very personal profession, we all want to do it our way, but when you start giving constructive feedback, get some teams working together to ensure that you’ve got processes for students to tackle certain types of questions or certain things consistently, I think that helps build that,” Kathman said.
Holmes Middle School was not the only school which celebrated good results in the district.
Glenn O. Swing Elementary continued to be one of the best performing schools in the state with a Learners Score of 83.3, which led to a distinguished rating.
John G. Carlisle Elementary combined Achievement, Gap and Growth score was 65.5, which was 13.2 points better than a year ago.
