Boosting Confidence Can Boost Effort

Self Confidence

Sometimes students don't do their schoolwork because they are afraid they won't be able to do it. In those circumstances, some well-directed praise can make a difference. To boost your teen's confidence, be positive. Tell them you know they can learn challenging material. Then be sure to praise effort and progress. When you do, be specific: "You didn't give up on that problem. Good for you!"

Here are some tips for building confidence and resilience in your child:

  • Be practical
  • Give your child opportunities to try new things
  • Encourage your child to keep trying
  • Model confidence in your own ability
  • Encourage your child to act confident
  • Practice social skills
  • Praise your child’s efforts
