Principal's Message

Welcome to Glenn O. Swing Elementary’s school website.  The goal of this website is to help keep our families and community updated on the programs, services and general goings on of the school.  On this site, you will be able to find dates for upcoming events such as family nights and site based decision making council meetings.  You will also be able to see pictures of our students in action learning, growing and playing.  Please check our site often, as it is always changing!

At Glenn O. Swing Elementary we believe in high expectations for all.  In fact, our vision for our school is that our students will be Respectful, Responsible, and Ready to Learn each and every day.  We teach them the importance of these attributes through frameworks such our Essential 30 and Second Step as well as through the expectations they are taught in the classrooms.  Students are taught to persevere on tasks and show a willingness to improve their assignments until they meet expectations.  We believe that all of this is necessary for success in their chosen career field, college, and life.

Our certified and support staff work together everyday to meet student needs and help them achieve their individual goals.  Our staff works with students in both small group and whole class settings to teach standards and intervene when students need more time to learn.  Our staff works collaboratively to learn and deeply understand the content they teach, in order to better understand what individual students will need to learn.  Our Community Learning Center afterschool program also works with our teachers to provide academic assistance to students to help them find success in their classroom.

We strongly believe in the value of teaching children to give back to their community.  Every student in our building participates in at least one service learning project per year.  Glenn O. Swing has been recognized as a School of Contribution for more than 10 consecutive years.

Students are provided opportunities to express themselves in the creative and performing arts.  Through a collaboration with the Carnegie Arts Center, students are provided opportunities to explore dance, drama, music, and visual arts.  In addition our Community Learning Center offers extension opportunities such as Glee, Drama, Gardening and Robotics Club.

We have a Family Resource Center that offers school-based family support.

We have tremendous community support that helps make our school successful.  We have two BEST Partners: Ernst and Young and Duke Energy.  We also have many of our classrooms that have been adopted by Adopt-A-Class.  All of these community partners are hands on, coming in and working with our students, providing mentoring and positive interactions with adults from the community.  Our school welcomes parents, community members and business leaders to come in and get to know our amazing students and become part of our little school.
