Educators and students from Covington Independent Public Schools were among the those receiving awards during the 2016 Education in Excellence Celebration sponsored by the Northern Kentucky Education Council and the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce.
Scott Alter, principal of Glenn O. Swing Elementary School, received the A.D. Albright Outstanding Administrator Leader Award. Alter was recognized for leading his school to academic success. For the past two testing cycles, Glenn O. ranked in the 99th percentile of all schools statewide. The school is Distinguished. Only three elementary schools in Northern Kentucky and 29 of the 720 elementary schools throughout the state posted higher scores than Glenn O. Swing in 2013-14.
Sherry Lindberg, who works as a teacher and assistant principal at Glenn O. Swing, was honored with a Golden Apple award. Ms. Lindberg teaches social studies. For several years, students in her class have scored 100 percent on the social studies portion on the state test.
Other awards winners included Sean Sullivan, a senior at Holmes High School who was named an Academic All-Star for his outstanding achievement in the classroom.
The One-to-One Literacy award went to Sue and Lee Flischel, who mentor students at John G. Carlisle Elementary School.
Covington students also participated in other ways at the celebration. Maddie Axtell, a junior at Holmes, spoke to the crowd of 800 about how NaviGo Scholars has helped her on her path to college. The hit of the night was a video produced by students at Holmes Middle School about the importance of advanced manufacturing.
Covington Superintendent Alvin Garrison, board members, administrators, school personnel, parents and supporters were on hand to celebrate with the winners. The event was held April 28 at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center.
“On behalf of the Covington Board of Education, I would like to extend a big congratulations to all of our winners,’’ Garrison said. “They work hard and are so deserving of the recognition and awards.’’
