Two Board Members Recognized for Years of Service

Board of Education

April Brockhoff   Tom Wherry

Two members of the Covington Board of Education were recognized for their outstanding service at the board meeting Thursday evening.

Superintendent Alvin Garrison praised outgoing board members April Brockhoff and Tom Wherry for their years of dedication to the students of Covington.

"Thank you for your time and service to Covington Independent Public Schools," Garrison said. "On behalf of our students, families and employees, thank you. We appreciate you."

Mrs. Brockhoff, who did not seek reelection, has been on the board since 2015. She worked on the budget and student code of conduct committees. During her tenure, she also served as the vice-chair and chair of the board.

"It says a lot when school board members send their children to the same district they serve," Garrison said. "April’s children attended Covington schools. That means she entrusted the district to educate the children who are dearest to her."

Garrison said Mrs. Brockhoff kept the board grounded as she often shared her perspective from the lens of a parent. "Mrs. Brockhoff advocated for children and she always paid close attention to the district budget," he said. "She made sure our tax dollars were well spent and focused on the needs of our students."

Mrs. Brockhoff said she was thankful for the opportunity to serve the children of Covington.

"I enjoyed every minute of it," she said.

Wherry, who was a member of the board from 2017 - 2020, came up short on his reelection bid. He was a very active board member, serving on the Covington Education Foundation and the TEAM Foundation. He also served as vice-chair and chair of the board.

Garrison said Wherry was an outspoken board member who was always full of ideas.

"He has our kids’ best interest at heart," Garrison said. Wherry has mentored several students and he always attended school and district activities.

"Tom has been a supportive school board member," Garrison said.

Wherry also said he enjoyed being on the board.

"What a pleasure it’s been to serve with you all – my board team, Mr. Garrison and his team and the entire district," Wherry said. "I appreciate all you’ve done for me and how much better you have made me. We will definitely continue to be in touch."
