Sixth District Students Honored at Board of Education Meeting

Mon, 10/17/2016 - 06:59 RCN Newsdesk

The Covington Board of Education agreed to accept a lower tax amount from the developers of the new apartment project near Mainstrasse Village.

The board unanimously approved the "payment in lieu of taxes", or PILOT, plan for the project, which is expected to begin construction in the spring and be completed in 2018. The Covington city commission approved the PILOT last week, too.

The project will place a new residential building and parking garage where the 501 Main building and adjacent parking lot currently sit along 5th Street between Main and Philadelphia Streets.

In other business, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction Charlene Ball offered an update on the effort to put Macbooks in the hands of all students at the high school. 880 Macbooks and 70 flat laptops were ordered.

"The big reveal will be at the staff meeting on October 26," Ball said. "Then the staff will be responsible for completing an 8 week training course, taking them up to the Christmas break."

Ball said that they are hoping to give the computers to the students some time in the second semester. The cost of $747,120 will be spread over four years.

Mark Saunier, from performance services, gave the board an update on the Guaranteed Energy Savings Projects, a program that has become an example for other school districts. The district put in two new boilers, at Ninth District and the Holmes High School Field House, that are smaller and more efficient. There is also new lighting in some of the schools, new toilet valves, and new pumps, as well as other money-saving initiatives like servers for the different buildings so that officials can see what is wrong with things in the building even if they are out of town.

The certified employee for the month of October is Joe Moran, a special education teacher at Sixth District, who was not able to attend. The classified employee for the month is Rene Fuson, an instructional assistant. Volunteer of the month is Autumn Fields.

The board was treated to a performance of the Rockin Rainbow Girls, a Ukele club made up of Julia Starr, Jaida Barnes, Kiana Morris, Gloria Brown, Jawaria Salaah, Chloe Luster, and Jasmine Johnson.
