COVINGTON, Ky. —

Students at Holmes High School have been given new MacBooks to take home and use during school year.

Having access to engage in school at home is very important. Computers are a big part of that.

At Holmes high school, 90 percent of the students have access to Wi-Fi, but only 30 percent have personal computers

Senior Michael Englemon and other Holmes High School students had to see the boxes of new laptops to believe that they would be receiving their own new MacBook Air laptops to take home.

“I didn’t believe it. I was like, 'There is no way that everybody here can get their own Apple laptop. There is just no way,’” Englemon said. “I have a lot of friends that don't even have Wi-Fi or cable or anything like that. So this is great. I can't even put it into words. This is a great opportunity for a lot of students here."

A total of 90 percent of the students at Holmes are on free or reduced lunch. Charlene Ball, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction, said that fact alone puts many Covington School District families in no position to make such a purchase.

“This may be the only device that some of our families have. Not only is this a great device for students to have, it's a great day for the families of Covington as well,” Ball said. “We are about $750,000 invested in this initiative. We have 880 MacBooks that we have leased. We have another 100-plus that we purchased, and that 100-plus actually went to teachers. They got those back in October."

Englemon said that although he gets only a few months with his new gadget, he can learn new lessons before he goes to college.

"I have never learned how to type properly, so when I get it, I am going to learn how to do that kind of stuff. That will help me in college. I am going to learn how to research better. There are a lot of things I need for college,” Englemon said.

Englemon said he sees the laptop as an opportunity.

“A lot of parents can't afford stuff. Having to pay $10 for an insurance policy and that's just so the student can take a laptop home? That is pretty good. You can't beat that,” Englemon said.

Ball said that, if funds are available, all middle school students will get their own computers next year. The district hopes to give the elementary students iPads the year after that.
