Covington school buses deliver meals right to students’ doorstep

WLWT

WLWT-TV COVINGTON, Ky. —

In the era of coronavirus, schools have to make split-second decisions based on the latest information they're given.

At Covington Schools, they recognized a need. They have now found a solution.

"We started last week with parent pick-up meals, but we found that that was difficult for some families due to transportation and parent being at home actually schooling their children right now, parents working,” said Taryn Stewart, Director of Nutrition Services.

It's been a very busy few weeks.

Dionne Flagg is one of 40 staff members who has been prepping for days.

"It's really needed. It is," said Flagg. "There's a lot of kids out here who depend on us. And they depend on our lunch, breakfast, and sometimes we do the dinner program also."

They are packing up meals for the 1,500 children -- or 90% of the students -- in the district who normally rely on free or reduced lunches during in-person classes.

Each bag has two breakfasts, two lunches, two dinners and two snacks.

Once they are packed, they go right to the district buses to be transported to the child's home.

"Since the buses for the most part are not used for any transportation for students, we were able to work closely with transportation to make this happen," said Taryn Stewart, Director of Nutrition Services.

Covington Schools is going to monitor how this program goes. And if it goes well they're looking to keep this program until the tentative start date of in-person classes on Sept. 28.

For questions or more info about meals, please contact Taryn Stewart, Director of Nutrition Services, at (859)392-1028.
