Happy 247th Birthday, United States Marine Corps!
November 10 is celebrated by Marines around the globe as an annual renewal of each Marine’s commitment to the Corps and the Corps’ commitment to our nation's quest for peace and freedom worldwide.
Today, the Holmes High School JROTC program, along with the concert band, participated in a cake-cutting ceremony to honor the birthday. Cadets, dressed in camouflage and dress blues, donned flags and swords in the formal ceremony. Retired Marine Communications Chief Chester Herron served as today's guest of honor.
Traditionally, the first piece of birthday cake is presented to the oldest Marine present and the second piece to the youngest Marine present. When and where this tradition began remains unknown.
