A group of six students (London McElfresh, Kaitlyn Mershon, Selena Kays, Andrea DeLeon Humphrey, Tianna Babineaux, and Daryl Turner) recently attended the Kentucky Youth Assembly (KYA) in Louisville KY. Students had the opportunity to network and make new friends across the state, while also learning about the lawmaking process.
The group presented a bill that would establish a drug test/screening that drivers, young and old, would have to pass in order to receive and renew their driver’s license. The bill was received warmly by the other schools at KYA, and it passed in both the House and Senate before receiving the Governor’s stamp of approval.
The trip proved quite successful for Holmes Middle School, London McElfresh received one of the conferences “Outstanding Delegate” awards. Daryl Turner was also a nominee for the same award.
The group also received a ”Premier Delegation” award for their efforts and accomplishments at the convention.
Congratulations on a job well done!
